The Gannet

A long iron over open water to a green the size of a tennis court. The wind decides the club; the tide decides the mood.

Starter’s note / Take one more club than the flag says, then trust it.

Long Marram

Five hundred and fifty yards through the high dunes. Reachable in two for about one player a season.

Starter’s note / The left bunker at 280 is deeper than it looks. Stay right of it.

Cliff Road

The fairway keeps the cliff company for its whole length. Safe is right, and right is farther than you think.

Starter’s note / Play to the 150 marker and walk the last stretch with the sea on your left.

Firm, fast and honest.

Fescue fairways, sand-based greens and bunkers revetted by hand each winter. We mow less, water less and let the ground play the way links ground always has: the ball runs, the wind matters, and the best shot is not always the highest.

Four seasons on the headland

Spring: Greens quicken, the fescue is still green, the dunes hold the wind off the tee.
Summer: Firm and fast. Light until ten. Ground game over air game on most holes.
Autumn: Gold fescue, low sun, the best conditioning of the year. The members' pick.
Winter: Open on temporary greens when the ground allows. Fires lit in the lounge from noon.
